Within the cross are five golden stars, and the shield is topped with a golden crown bearing a red lion rampant, facing left. Beneath the shield is a banner reading "Sub cruce salus," which translates loosely from Lation to "Under the safety of the cross." Above is the text "Ex libris Charles Kendall Adams" and below is additional text reading "The gift of President Adams to the Library of the University of Wisconsin, 1901."
