A heraldic-style institutional bookplate in black ink on ivory paper with a line border, featuring the coat-of-arms of Phillips Exeter Academy, which bears a lion rampant and is topped with a seated lion, and surrounded by elaborate mantling. Above and below is the text “Pia mente studeatur. In usum Academia Phillipsa Exoniensis,” which loosely translates to “Let him study with a pious mind in the use of the Academy of Phillips Exeter.” Additional text below reads, "Bibliotheca Latina. Cum in bibliotheca separatism uterque nostrum ad suum stadium libellos quos vellet evolveret," which very loosely translated reads “Latin Library. Each of us in the library opens such books as were suited to us separately.”
