Bookplate for Walter Merriam Pratt
1935 / Arthur N. Macdonald, East Orange, NJ
An elaborate pictorial-style bookplate in black ink on ivory paper, featuring a central image of a study. In the study are bookshelves with sculptures and picture frames on top of them, several chairs, a writing desk, patterned rugs, and paintings on the walls. This scene is surrounded by an elaborate border with the seals of a number of organizations in each corner and a lion rampant at the op in the center. The upper left image is the City Seal of Chelsea, MA. The upper right is the seal of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. The lower right is the seal of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and the lower left image is the seal of the Society of Colonial Wars of Massachusetts. In the center of the left of the border is an object with the date 1752, and in the center of the right side is the Masonic square and compass with the date 1638. Beneath the lion is a scroll with the text "Omnia Possibilia Volenti," which translates from Latin to "All things are possible for the willing." At the bottom of the bookplate is the text "Ex Libris" with the name Walter Merriam Pratt.
