Above is the academy's name and the text "Pia mente studeatur," which translates loosely from the Latin to "Let him study with a pious mind." Additional text below reads, "Bequest of Mary Abbott Gorham Sawyer, Granddaughter of Benjamin Abbot, Principal of the Phillips Exeter Academy, 1788-1838."
