A pictorial-style bookplate in black ink on ivory paper featuring a sailing ship with crossed on the sails. Behind the ship is a setting or rising sun, and the ocean is framed by two fencing sabers. Below the ocean is the text “Aprendo il mare fummo in cotal guise che nazion nessuna inanzi aperse," which translates loosely from Italian to "Opening the sea we were in such a way that no one before opened," and "Ex libris M.A. Ortiz."
