Elwyn Farm, Winter
Mid to late 19th century / Foster, Sarah Haven (1827-1900)
Collection: Sarah Haven Foster Views of Portsmouth
"Tobias Langdon, a grandson of Ambrose Gibbins, was born on the farm at Sagamore in 1660. In 1687 he settled on this farm, which has ever since remained in the family. John Langdon, the grandson of Tobias, who was afterwards Governor, was born here in 1739. His only child, Elizabeth, married Thomas Elwyn, and their son was John Elwyn, the late owner of the place. He was born in 1801 in England, where his parents were traveling, but resided in Portsmouth until his death in 1876. He was a gentleman of some eccentricities, but a scholar of great acquirements, especially in history and philology."
Excerpted from The Portsmouth Guide Book, 1896, by Sarah Haven Foster.
Inscription reads, "Elwyn House in winter."
