Salter House, front

Mid to late 19th century / Foster, Sarah Haven (1827-1900)

VP004_SalterHouseFront_6in.jpg

"Built, according to family tradition, in 1720, (although the date 1746, carved on a beam in the attic may be the year of its erection,) by Titus Salter. His son, Capt. Titus Salter, a brave and energetic officer, commanded during the Revolution the forts at the mouth of the harbor. The house itself formed a conspicuous landmark during the war, and local historians mention its beautiful illumination when the news of peace was received. The old wharf behind it was a busy scene at that time, when large vessels could come up to it with their cargoes."

Excerpted from The Portsmouth Guide Book, 1896, by Sarah Haven Foster.

Inscription reads, "H.P. Salter House - built 1770. Salter St."
