Bookplate for Wake Forest College
post-1931 / F.C. Blank, Del.
A heraldic/pictorial-style bookplate in black and red ink on ivory paper with a Greek key border. The college seal is above an image of a row of books on a shelf, with the center book being open, and a scale in front of it. The college seal features a simplified shield bearing the Chi-Rho symbol flanked by Alpha and Omega. Beneath the shield is a banner reading "Pro humanitate," and around the border of the shield is the college's name and the date 1834. Around the seal are four circles in red ink. Clockwise from top left they read "PhD Leipzig 1902," "Sorbonne 1908-09," "LLB Columbia 1915," "Harvard 1905-06." Additional text beneath reads "In memory of Hubert Evans, Class of 1898, 1872-1931." Handwritten on back of the bookplate is “Hovey Coll. Patch.” The bookplate is accompanied by a handwritten note that reads "A.B. & A.M. 1898; Wake Forest College North Carolina. Ph.D. 1902, Univ. of Hepzeig; L.L.B. 1915 Columbia; Had this designed by a student here when I presented his books to his Alma Mater.”
