A heraldic-style institutional bookplate in black ink on ivory paper with a line border, featuring the coat-of-arms of Phillips Exeter Academy, which bears a lion rampant and is topped with a seated lion, and surrounded by elaborate mantling. The academy's name is above, as is the text, "Pia mente studeatur," which translates loosely from the Latin to "Let him study with a pious mind." Additional text below reads, "The Abner L. Merrill Book Fund."
